Personal history before the war

George was born to John Woodford Barton (26 yrs) and Mary Jane Hursey Clarke (22 yrs) on 21st August 1908 in Little Sampford, Essex.

He joined the Royal Navy in December 1924 starting his training at Stotley, Ipswich. George started off as a Boy Telegraphist, then a Stoker II and then Petty Officer. 1938, 1939 & 1940 awarded RMG - Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

George was married to Lilian Maud James (deceased) in April 1933 and had a daughter Pamela Lilian (deceased) in April 1935.

Wartime experience

George was captured in Hong Kong in December 1941 and held as a Japanese POW until 9th September 1945.

Personal history post-war

George remained in the Royal Navy for another 3 years after the war ended.

My mother (sister-in-law to George), said that he never liked to talk about his experience, but she did also say he came home with no finger nails and no toe nails due to being ill treated.

George is buried at Weston Mill Cemetery, Plymouth along with his wife and mother-in-law. His funeral was attended by men only as per his requests.
