Personal history before the war

Robert was originally from Liverpool.

Wartime experience

Records show that Robert D. Curran was posted to Hong Kong before the outbreak of the war and was captured by the Japanese in Hong Kong on 25th December 1942. He survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru and records show that he was held in Osaka Camp 9 until liberation on 2nd September 1945.

His brother, Joe, stated that he was sent to Maritoba in Canada to recover after liberation, before coming home.

Personal history post-war

War records show that Robert rejoined the Royal Artillery and became W.O.1 Regimental Sergeant Major. He died aged 46 in 1968 and was buried with full military honours in Springwood Cemetery Liverpool.
