Personal history before the war

John was the 3rd child and second son born to John Matthew Leith Spence (also of the Royal Engineers) and his wife Emily. They had 6 children. John was born in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. He lived in Frome, Somerset when he was 7 years old.
