Personal history before the war

Christopher was born in Co. Kildare Ireland in 1916 where his father Thomas was serving with the 9th Reserve Cavalry Regiment. He grew up in Islington North London with his two brothers and one sister.

In 1934 he and his brother Leslie ran away from home and joined the Middlesex Regiment. He went into the 1st Battalion and Leslie (my father) into the 2nd Battalion.

Wartime experience

At the outbreak of the war, he was posted to Hong Kong and was captured by the Japanese when the Hong Kong Garrison fell.

His brother Leslie went to France with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), survived Dunkirk and served in North Africa, Italy and back in France. He was the lucky one of the brothers and survived the war.
