Andrew was born to Andrew and Mary Ann Black in Cowdenbeath. He had two older brothers, James and Thomas, two younger brothers, John and Lindsay Christie and a younger sister, Kathy.
He was educated at Broad Street primary school then Beath high school.
Andrew was a very sporty individual winning many trophies and medals, particularly for swimming. He went on to join the army straight from school and is noted as living at 53 School Street at the time.
Andrew was taken prisoner at the surrender of Hong Kong although he was posted as missing on the 19th December 1942. He was placed in the POW camp for around 9 months before boarding the Lisbon Maru destined to become slave labour for the Japanese in mainland Japan.
The Lisbon Maru was torpedoed by an American Submarine on the 1st October 1942 as the transporting freighter had no identifying marks stating that it was carrying POWs plus there were only Japanese soldiers visible on deck. The ship sank on the 2nd October 1942.
Andrew was initially reported missing presumed drowned and his body was never recovered.
Andrew's medals were issued to his family at Blarney Crescent, Cowdenbeath in 1950.
